    • support widely available as used by most organisations
    • been thoroughly tested so know features will work
    • documentation widely available to help with setup
    • end users are familiar with the system so they are more likely to use/buy
    • cost to purchase can be lower than bespoke software as its not customised for each organisation
  • Disadvantages of off the shelf:
    • cost to purchase / maintain can be high which company cant afford or customers
    • can contain additional features that the company dont want which reduces the performance of the system
