  • Aim
To see if there is a correlation between testosterone and physical aggression
  • Null + Alternate hypothesis
There will be no relationship between testosterone and physical agg
(1 tailed) the higher the masculinity scare (FQ score) the higher the physical agg score
  • Our result
-0.73 is calculated value which is less than critical value of 0.829 (one tailed test w 0.05 significance) so results not significant and we accept the null
  • Method
Opportunity sample - 6th form centre and asked people to take part. Asked Pa to measure length if index and ring finger and divide index/ring to get FQ score. Then asked them to take the Buss Perry questionnaire to get 4 agg scores - we chose physical agg. Carried out Spearman’s Rho calc to see if results significant
  • Strength
Standardised procedure as all Ps did the same agg questionnaire (Buss Perry) - replicable so possible to repeat + check for consistency of results into whether there’s a relationship between masculinity and agg
  • Strength 2
All Ps completed their agg questionnaire in silence + anonymous. Increases validity as Ps less likely to be affected by social desirability bias and more honest w responses
  • Weakness
Some Ps didn’t understand all statements in the agg questionnaire - eg. Powder keg - decreased validity of agg score as some q open to interpretation
  • Weakness 2
Sample was only 6 Ps of year 12 students at a private school so not representative of all year 12 agg + masculinity levels
So our results about relationship between agg and masculinity cannot be generalised to all 17y/o from state schools
