• Inspector - ‘It’s better to ask for the earth than to take it.’
• Eric – “We all did her in alright"
• Eric – “the fact remains that I did what I did. And mother did what she did. And the rest of you did what you did to her."
• Eric – “I'm ashamed of you as well - both of you”
• Eric – “"you killed her - and the child she'd have had too - my child - your own grandchild - you killed them both - damn you"
• Eric – “You're not the kind of father a chap could go to when he's in trouble"
• Eric - “I intended to pay it back”
• Eric - “(miserably ) Could I have a drink first?"
• Inspector - “Fire and blood and anguish”
• Sheila - “The point is, you don’t seem to have learnt anything”
• Sheila - You and I aren’t the same people who sat down to dinner here.”
• Sheila - “between us we killed her”.
• Sheila - “so I’m really responsible?”
• Sheila - “But these girls aren’t cheap labour – they’re people”
• Mr Birling - “We were paying the usual rates and if they didn’t like those rates, they could go and work somewhere else”
• Mr Birling - “be living in a world that’ll have forgotten about all these Capital versus Labour agitations”
• Mr Birling - “It’s my duty to keep labour costs down,”
• Mr Birling - “Obviously it has nothing whatever to do with the wretched girl’s suicide,”
• Mrs Birling - “Naturally that was one of the things that prejudiced me against her case,”
• Mrs Birling - “We’ve done a great deal of useful work in helping deserving cases,”
• Mrs Birling - “I consider I did my duty [...] I’ve done nothing wrong,”
• Mrs Birling - “For letting father and me have her chucked out of her jobs!”
• Sheila - “So nothing really happened. So there’s nothing to be sorry for, nothing to learn. We can all go on behaving just as we did,”
• Inspector- “This girl killed herself - and died a horrible death. But each of you helped to kill her,”
• Inspector - “We don’t live alone,”
• Sheila - “He’s giving us the rope - so that we’ll hang ourselves,”
• Sheila - “Everything we said had happened really had happened. If it didn’t end tragically, then that’s lucky for us. But it might have done,”
