  the gap where 2 neurons meets
• info needs to be passed from one neuron to the next but can’t be passed as an electrical impulse over the synapse
• info is transmitted by chemical neurotransmitters
• when electrical impulses arrive at the terminal of one neuron there’s a release of the neurotransmitter chemicals into the synapse
• neurotransmitters travel across the synapse and bind to receptor sites on the other neuron
• receptor sites are specific for each neurotransmitter
