• The Antarctic Treaty is one of the most successful international agreements of all time. It came into force in 1961. Initially signed by 12 countries that had been actively involved in scientific research in the late 1950s.
• Today 52 countries have signed the Antarctic Treaty
• the Antarctic Treaty helps regulate human activity in the area, and resolve political disputes over territory
