NERVOUS SYSTEM

• THERE ARE 2 PARTS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM:

  • CENTRAL nervous system (CNS)
  • Other NEURONES- running TO and FROM the CNS
• WHAT DOES THE NERVOUS SYSTEM DO?

  • Enables HUMANS to REACT to their SURROUNDINGS and to COORDINATE their BEHAVIOUR
• HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • RECEPTOR (detects STIMULUS) sends ELECTRICAL IMPULSES to CNS
  • The CNS sends these IMPULSES to an EFFECTOR (muscle or gland) which brings about a RESPONSE
• CNS:

  • CENTRAL nervous SYSTEM
  • Consists of the BRAIN and the SPINAL CORD
• NERVE CELLS:

  • LONG
  • THIN
  • FUNCTION: Carry electrical IMPULSES from one point to another
  • BRANCHED connections- pass messages
