  A coal fire

  Coal and a large store of chemical energy.

  When coal is burned the chemical energy is transferred by heating to the thermal energy store of the coal.

  Hot coal flames transfer energy to surrounds by heating and radiation.
• Example 2

  Car braking

  Moving car has kinetic energy.

  Brakes mechanically ‘do work‘ on the car to slow it down.

  Kinetic energy of car decreases and thermal energy increases.
