• Yarm is a historic market town that is particularly prone to flooding.
• The most recent serious flood was in January 1995.
• A new flood defence scheme costing £2.1 million has been built. This has involved: Improved flood warning systems and gabions
• Building on low-lying and flood-prone land is discouraged
• The barrage was designed to protect against storm surges and flooding at high tide by controlling the flow of the river using 4 hydraulic flood gates.
