The genetic code

Cards (10)

  • What are the three feature of the genetic code?
    Degenerate, Non-overlapping, Universal
  • What does degenerate mean?
Each amino acid is coded by more than one triplet of bases
  • What does Universal mean?
The same triplet of bases codes for the same amino acid in all organisms
  • What does Non-overlapping mean?
Each base in a gene is only a part of one triplet of bases that codes for one amino acid
  • What are introns?
    Non coding sections of DNA
  • What are exons?
Coding sequences of DNA that are transcribed into mRNA and translated into proteins
  • What is a start codon ?
The start of every gene that codes for an amino acid
  • What is a stop codon?
The end of every gene that are 3 bases that Do not code for an amino acid
  • What is a genome?
An organisms complete set of DNA in one cell
  • What is a proteome?
Full range of proteins in one cell
