  • chemicals released directly into blood - carried in blood plasma - affect target cells in certain places - hormones control things in organs and cells need constant adjustment
  • produces in glands - travel slow but long lasting
• what does adrenaline do?

  • found in the adrenal glands
  • readies body for fight or flight response
  • increase heart rate, blood flow to muscles and blood sugar levels
• what does insulin do?

  • found in the pancreas
  • helps control blood sugar level
  • stimulates liver to turn glucose = glycogen for storage
• what is testosterone?

  • found in the testes
  • main male sex hormone
  • promotes secondary sexual male characteristics
• what is progesterone?

  • found in the ovaries
  • support pregnancy
  • maintain lining of uterus
• what is oestrogen?

  • found in the ovaries
  • main female sex hormone
  • controls menstrual cycle and promotes female secondary sexual characteristics

  • found in pituitary gland (brain)
  • controls water content
  • increase permeability of kidney tubules to water
• what is FSH?

  • found in the pituitary gland
  • female sex hormone
  • cause egg to mature into ovary - stimulate ovaries - produce oestrogen

  • found in the pituitary gland
  • female sex hormone
  • stimulates release of egg from ovary
• what is the difference between hormones and nerves?

  • hormone = slower, long term, more general way of acting
  • nerve = faster, short term, act in a very precise area
