  • Swinburne supports the idea that Re can prove the existence of god.
  • Swinburne says it is reasonable that god would want to engage with his creation. It fits with gods qualities. If god exists we should expect RE to also occur.
  • Principle of Credulity: people experiancing RE should believe intuitively what their senses tell them.
  • Principle of Testimony: should trust accounts of RE if there is no reason to doubt them (Eg drug addicts)
  • With his principles swinburne is trying to leave the burden of proof with those who are trying to doubt it. We tend to assume regular experiance is true, why do we doubt RE. If the experiances are genuine it is possible to conclude god exists.
  • Alston: all beliefs based on perception are prima facie justified, 'innocent until proven guilty'
  • 'prima facie' - meaning first look. 'prima facie justified'
  • If we refuse to accept the principle of credulity we land in a sceptical bog. We should allow RE credibility until there is evidence against them.
  • Prior Probability: if the existance of UFOs is highly improbable, when there are reports of proof people are highly sceptical. Swinburne says there is reasonable prior probability of gods existance, even if none conclusively prove his existance they make the case stronger.
