• active volcano - a volcano that is currently erupting or has recently erupted eg Mt Etna
• dormant volcano - a volcano that has not erupted in a long time eg Mt St Helens
• extinct volcano - a volcano that has been erupted and is no longer active eg Slemish Co. Antrim
• crater - a large depression in the ground caused by the explosion of a volcano
• magma - molten rock that is under the earth's surface
• volcanic ash - a fine powdery substance that is ejected from a volcano
• Lava - molten rock that has been erupted from a volcano and flows on the ground
• magma chamber - the upper part of the mantle where magma is stored and erupts from
• mid ocean ridge - a mountain range that runs along the mid-oceanic ridge created by a fissure in the earths crust
• fissure - a crack or break in the earth's crust, especially one that forms at the surface
• pacific ring of fire - a series of volcanoes and earthquakes around the edge of the pacific ocean
