Addition-Elimination Reactions

Cards (4)

  • acyl chloride + water --> carboxylic acid + HCl
acid anhydride + water --> 2 carboxylic acids
  • [STEP 1] partially negative oxygen from water forms a covalent bond with the partially positive carbon atom from the carbonyl group. the double bond in the carbonyl group breaks and the lone pair goes to the oxygen, giving it a negative charge
  • [STEP 2] C=O bond reforms and C-Cl bond breaks to give the chlorine atom a negative charge
  • [STEP 3] a bond forms between a the chloride ion and one of the hydrogens. This breaks the O-H bond, with both electrons going to the oxygen
