Recruitment

• Britain joined war on 4th august 1914. Men between 19 and 30 were asked to join up
• Some women handed out white feathers to men they thought should be in the army
• Recruitment posters used four main messages to get men to sign up:

  1. patriotism
  2. anti German hatred
  3. cowardice
  4. herosim
• Why might might have signed up:

  • pride
  • heroism
  • adventure
  • friends
  • competition
  • thought it would be over soon
• The secretary for state of war was Lord Kitchener
