The working memory model

    Cards (5)

    • The working memory model:
      1. Central executive
      2. Episodic buffer
      3. Visuo-spatial sketchpad
      4. Phonological loop
      5. Articulatory process (inner voice)
      6. Phonological store (inner ear
      7. Long term memory
    • The working memory model:
Created by Baddeley & Hitch (1974)
      • Central executive - directs attention, allocates tasks to slave systems, has no storage
      • Episodic Buffer - a temporary store that integrates information to experience a mental episode of what is being experienced & maintains time sequencing
      • Visual-spatial sketchpad - planning & processing visual & spatial tasks. Logie divided it into the visual cache for what items look like & the inner scribe for the spatial relationship between items
    • The working memory model:
      • Phonological loop - preserves order of auditory information
      • Phonological store - holds the words you hear
      • Articulatory process - performs maintenance rehearsal
    • The working memory model AO3:
      • Evidence from brain scan studies - different parts of the brain are activated for differet tasks - separate parts
      • Dual task performance - pts perform better when doing tasks of different natures than doing two verbal tasks - different slave systems
      • Functioning of central executive - too vague, doesn't explain how information is transferred - too simplistic
      • Evidence for PL & AP - explains word length effect. The PL has a duration of 2 seconds so long words can't be rehearsed. When given an articulatory suppression task, the effect disappears
    • The working memory model AO3:
      • Evidence from brain scan studies
      • Dual task research
      • Functioning of central executive
      • Evidnece for the phonological loop & the artciulatory process
