Types of long term memory

• Types of LTM:

  • Episodic
  • Semantic
  • Procedural
• Episodic memories - personal memories of events. Contains specific details, context & emotion
• Semantic memories - knowledge shared by everyone, could be abstract or concrete. Acquired through episodic memories
• Procedural memories - how to do things . Automatic as a result of repeated practice & are disrupted if you think about them
• Types of LTM AO3:

  • ✅ Evidence from brain scans - types of LTM are found in different parts of the brain so are separate
  • ✅ Support from case studies - HM could still form procedural memories but not semantic or episodic - supports multiple types of LTM ❌ Problems with using brain damaged patients - can't be certain what's been affected
  • ❌ Fourth type of LTM - perceptual representation system memory related to priming (yellow & banana) - too simplistic
