2) Use Of Plant Hormones

•  Plant growth hormones are used by farmers and gardeners.
• Auxins are used:

  • as weed killers, because they make the weeds grow so rapidly that they use up their food reserves and die
  • as rooting powders, because they make cuttings produce roots when they are planted
  • for promoting growth in tissue culture
• Ethene is used in the food industry to control ripening of fruit during storage and transport
• Gibberellins can be used to:

  end seed dormancy and make seeds germinate

  promote flowering, so that plants flower when there is the most demand, e.g.

  Easter and Mother's Day.

  • increase fruit size.
