ANATOMY OF THE HEART

• Pericardium - a double-walled sac that protects the heart
• Layers of the Pericardium (superficial to deep):

  • Fibrous pericardium - superficial; loose
  • Serous membrane - deep to fibrous pericardium, has 2 layers (Parietal pericardium, Visceral pericardium or epicardium), separated by the pericardial cavity
• Walls of the heart (superficial to deep):

  • Epicardium (visceral pericardium)
  • Myocardium (mostly cardiac muscle)
  • Endocardium (endothelium)
