HEART VALVES

• Heart Valves - allow blood to flow in only one direction and prevents backflow
• Atrioventricular (AV) valves - between atria and ventricles; open during heart relaxation, closed during ventricular contraction

  • Right AV valve - tricuspid valve
  • Left AV valve - bicuspid (mitral) valve
• Semilunar valves - between ventricle and artery; closed during heart relaxation, open during ventricular contraction

  • Pulmonary semilunar valve
  • Aortic semilunar valve
