  • The typical reactions of acids are neutralization reactions with bases. There are 3 different types.
  • There are 5 general types of acid reactions:
    • neutralization with a base
    • reaction with a reactive metal
    • reaction with a carbonate
    • reaction with a hydrogencarbonate
  • The 3 types of acid base neutralization reactions are:
    • acid + hydroxide -> salt + water
    • acid + metal oxide -> salt + water
    • acid + ammonia (NH3) -> salt
  • There's one type of acid and reactive metal reaction:
    • acid + reactive metal -> salt + hydrogen (H2)
    The reactive metal has to be above copper in the activity series
  • There's one type of reaction of an acid with carbonates:
    • acid + carbonate -> salt + carbon dioxide + water
    * carbonates can be soluble or insoluble
  • One type of acid reaction with hydrogencarbonates:
    • acid + hydrogen carbonate -> salt + carbon dioxide + water
