  • Behavioural Characteristics
    • reduced levels of energy which has a knock on effect on things like withdrawals from work, school and social life
    • disruption to eating and sleeping behaviour - may experience insomnia or hypersomnia, appetite and eating may increase or decrease
    • aggression and self-harm
  • Emotional Characteristics
    • lowered mood - feeling worthless and empty
    • anger - more negative emotions and fewer positive ones, can lead to self-harm or aggressions
    • lowered self esteem
  • Cognitive Characteristics
    • poor concentration - find it hard to stick to a task or make decisions that are normally easy
    • attending to and dwelling on the negative - people feel more inclined to pay more attention to the negative aspects of the situation rather than the positive
    • absolutist thinking - most situations are not all-good or all-bad but with depressions often people just think this way so when a situation is negative they see it as an absolute disaster
