Factors affecting prejudice

• Personality is innate (born with).
• Your upbringing (develop nurture) is parenting.
• Authoritarian personality – conditional love – strict rules parenting – kids can’t be themselves – they displaced their anger, frustration onto socially inferior minority groups.
• Empatic is unconditional love.
• Right wing authoritarian: Very conventional beliefs about right and wrong – don’t like change (mixture of obedience and prejudice).
• Respect for authority (obedience).
• Belief in aggression toward those who are different.
• A negative view of people in general.
• A need for strong leadership.
• A black and white worldview.
• A tendency to project own feelings of inadequacy, rage, and fear onto a group of scapegoats.
• A preoccupation with violence and sex.
• Social dominance orientation: People are motivated for their ingroup to gain power, dominance, and superiority.
• They prefer hierarchy system versus equal distribution of power.
• See the world as a ‘competitive jungle’.
• Credibility: Cohrs – predictive validity.
• Collectivist culture traits: Collectivism is the tendency on the individual and societal level to view oneself as interdependent and a member of a group rather than as an independent being.
• People from collectivist cultures find it difficult to go against the normal.
• Shift from collective culture to individualistic – like how social times change over time.
• Objections: Shana Levin got Jewish participants to think about social identity in Israel and most Ashkenazi Jews scored higher SDO scores compared to other types of Jews.
