  • What is Type 1 Diabetes?
    • DISORDER in which the PANCREAS fails to produce SUFFICIENT insulin
    • Can be GENETIC
    • Generally occurs in CHILDHOOD / TEENAGE years
    • Characterised by UNCONTROLLED high blood GLUCOSE levels
    • If blood GLUCOSE levels are too HIGH- people with type 1 diabetes can feel ILL, and in RARE cases, DIE
  • TREATMENT 1- INSULIN THERAPY:
    • Insulin is INJECTED into THIGH or ABDOMEN
    Amount of Insulin injected depends on:
    • What the person has EATEN (lots of CARBOHYDRATES eaten- more INSULIN needed
    • How much EXERCISE has been done
  • TREATMENT 2- EXERCISE:
    • Muscles ABSORB more GLUCOSE from BLOOD during EXERCISE
    • More EXERCISE- less INSULIN is needed to be INJECTED
  • TREATMENT 3- MONITORING DIET:
    • People with Type 1 diabetes are ENCOURAGED to NOT eat too much SUGARY food
