Wave 
a disturbance that propagates through space transferring energy but not matter
Types of waves
water waves, sound waves, electromagnetic waves (such as visible light), seismic waves (produced by earthquakes)
Transverse wave 
the oscillation of the wave is perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction of energy transfer (the direction of travel of the wave)
Longitudinal wave 
the oscillation of the wave is parallel to the direction of energy transfer
Wavelength 
distance from one peak/trough to the next peak/trough (measured in metres)
Amplitude 
distance from equilibrium position to a peak/trough
Frequency 
number of waves passing a point each second (measured in hertz)
