  • what is the equipment?
    - newly germinated seeds
    - three Petri dishes
    - cotton wool or compost
    - water and pipette
  • what should you do once you have three Petri dishes containing five newly geminated seedlings growing in a layer of cotton wool or compost?
    measure the length of each shoot from the base to the tip
  • what should you do after measuring the length of the shoots for the first time?
    move the Petri dishes into position - one on a windowsill in full sunlight, one in a dark cupboard and one placed in partial light
  • what should you do after moving the Petri dishes into position?
    leave the experiment for a week until the seedlings have grown - adding water everyday
  • what should you do after leaving the seedlings for a week?
    measure the length of each shoot from root to tip - if a shoot is curved, use a piece of string or straighten it before measuring
