  • ‘Easy well-bred young man about town’   
    Adjective ‘easy’ – shows how life for the ruling elite is easy. Suggests a life of leisure and comfort.
    ‘well-bred’ – establishes his elevated position within society
    ‘man about town’ – suggests an air of worldliness and sophistication. Shows him to be a fashionable socialite with the wealth and freedom to do as he pleases, when he pleases. Also foreshadows his infidelity – he goes ‘about town’ seeking enjoyment and pleasure.  
  • ‘Rather too manly to be a dandy’     
    Shows him to confident and content with his own masculinity. He is a symbol of the refined and cultured masculinity of the upper classes.
