Independent variable

Dependent variable
The thing that is hypothesized to change in a certain way during your experiment

Experimental control
Removing all other factors aside from the dependent and independednt variables in an experiment
Placebo affect
When people get the effects they believe will happen, regardless of whether or not the thing was given
Experimental group
Group in a study that gets the independent variable
Control group
Group in a study that is given a placebo that looks exactly like the independent variable
Random sample
Each person in a large population has the same chance of randomly being chosen for a study
Representative sample
Group looks like the larger population so that findings are generalizable
Random assignment
Each participant has an equal chance of being put in the experimental or placebo group
As control increases, confounding variables decrease
As experimental control increases, authenticity of behavior decreases
Too much experimental control leads to lab-like conditions, which are confounding variables in and of themselves, because they may cause subjects to act differently
