  • Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
  • Atmosphere: what the reader feels from the page (not given by the author)
  • Allusion: an implied or direct reference in fiction to a known historical or current “real world” person, place, or thing.
  • Contrast: when the author puts two different ideas or symbols to pair up together, more connected to theme
  • Flashback: when the story goes back in time since it’s something that is referenced in the now.
  • Foreshadowing: the implied thing is said to be there but is only revealed at the end.
  • Hyperbole: An exaggeration of what’s really being said or done.
  • Imagery: what a writer does to paint a picture in your head (they can use multiple such as tactile, auditory, visual, nasal, and taste)
  • Juxtaposition: a contrast between 2 ideas to highlight their diferences
  • Metaphor: compares two things by making it literal//the thing it’s comparing it to.
  • Mood: The feeling brought upon the pages, made by how to author uses narrative elements
  • Personification: gives non-human things, human traits
  • Onomatopoeia: adds sound effects by making them literal on the page
  • Symbol: shows significance in certain ways within the book by adding another meaning to it
  • Syntax: creates a sentence that affects the reader
  • Tone: reflects the emotion or attitude that the author wants to communicate
