Coding

Cards (6)

  • What are the three types of coding?
    Visual , acoustic , semantic
  • STM is largely encoded through what type of coding?
    Acoustically
  • LTM is largely encoded through what type of coding?
    Semantically
  • What was Baddeleys Coding experiment?
Gave participants one of 4 lists to remember, these lists had words either acoustically similar or different, semantically similar or different. Then they had to recall the words either immediately (STM) or after 20 minutes (LTM)
  • What were the results of Baddley's coding experiment?
Participants did worse on acoustically similar words when tested immediately, they did worse on semantically similar words when tested after 20 minutes. Concluded STM is acoustic, LTM is semantic
  • Give 3 limitations of Baddley's coding experiment
    • STM may not be exclusively acoustic, LTM may not be exclusively semantic
    • Different encoding types depending on the memory being remembered
    • Baddley's study has limited application due to the use of artificial stimuli
