    • A limitation is the direction of cause and effect. Some researchers show that inequity may cause dissatisfaction. For example, shown through Utne et al. Other research shows that dissatisfaction causes inequity. Dissatisfaction leads to noticing inequities, then more dissatisfaction, found by Grote and Clark, and they called it the cycle of misery. Therefore, inequity may be a cause and an effect of dissatisfaction. Equity theory is just a partial explanation of this process and cannot explain it fully.
    • A limitation is that there are individual differences that affect the senses of an equity in a relationship. Huseman et al. suggests that not all partners are concerned about equity. Benevolence are happy to contribute more than they get. Entitled believe they deserve to over benefit and accept it without feeling distressed or guilty. This shows that a desire from equity varies from one individual to another and is not a universal feature of romantic relationships.
    • A limitation is that equity theory may be culture-biased. Researchers found that couples in an individualist culture were most satisfied when their relationship was equitable. However, partners in a collectivist culture in Jamaica were most satisfied when over-benefiting. This suggests that the theory is limited because it only applies to some cultures, showing the theory has cultural relatavism.
    • A strength is that there is supporting evidence for equity theory. Utne et al conducted a survey with recently married couples who had been together more than two years before marrying. Those who saw their relationships as equitable were more satisfied than thoe who were over/under benefitting. This supports that inequity can lead to greater dissatisfaction in couples.
    • strength counterpoint - However, other studies may not support this as another study found that equity did not distinguish between relationships which ended and those that continued. Self-disclosure was another important variable. This may suggest the theory is less valid because it fails to acknowledge other factors contribute to maintenance of a relationship.
