  • The freedom to say what one would like has been seen as desirable, the first amendment to the constitution of the USA states that 'congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech'.
  • This practise is often restricted even in countries that seem more liberal such as the USA.
  • State Security limits what may be published.
  • Laws governing libel and slander prevent defamatory remarks.
  • Personal privacy has to be weighed against the media.
  • Standards of public morality/decency may limit personal activities/words/publication.
  • There is debate over if censorship should be allowed at all, and who should be allowed to impose it.
  • Who should be allowed to form the nations morals? and weather once a government starts making well meaning laws of restraint become repressive.
  • The ability to question and challenge is key to a free society.
