Bone Healing

Cards (5)

  • What are the 4 stages of bone healing?
    Haemostasis
    Inflammation
    Proliferation
    Maturation/Remodelling
  • What is in the haemostasis stage of bone healing?
    Haematoma formation
  • What is in the inflammatory stage of bone healing?
    Vasodilation & increased vascular permeability
    Influx of inflammatory cells
    Formation of granulation tissue
    Osteoprogenitor cells recruited to site
  • What is in the proliferation stage of bone healing?
Soft callus formation - bridges fracture ends & stabilise bone
Chondrocytes lay down cartilage & supporting blood vessels into callus
Soft cartilaginous callus is reabsorbed & replaced by hard callus (woven bone)
Cartilage matrix is calcified & resorbed & replaced w/woven bone -> increased mechanical rigidity
  • What is in the maturation/remodelling stage of bone healing?
Hard callus resorbed & remodelled into lamellar bone
    Osteoclasts resorb woven bone
    Osteoblasts deposit new lamellar bone
