• The great famine was from 1921-22
• The kulaks was blamed for the famine as they were grain hoarders
• Under the impact of war communism peasants had grown less grain which meant there were food shortages - Lenin had to accept international air to ease famine - there were a reported 118 uprisings in Feb 1918 - workers I'm towns and cities had to work long hours with inadequate rations - sailors at kronstadt naval base mutinied against their gov march 1921
• KEY FEATURES OF NEP - markets and private trading were legalised, private enterprise was aloud anyone could set up shop or business for profit, new currency launched to reduce inflation and requisition of grain was ended - was replaced by a tax of kind
• This was hard for Lenin to justify to the BP because the NEP allowed aspects of capitalism back Into the economy and some saw it as betrayal of the principles of the october revolution
• Lenin justified the NEP to bolsheviks by saying it was only temporary and it was necessary for political survival in thr face of widespread revolt and break down of order
