Food security

• The birth rate is increasing, affecting food security
• Food security is having enough food to feed a population and sustainable methods of food production should be found to feed everyone
• Increasing human population means:

  • increasing demand for fish and meat, meaning more land is used for animal farming
  • movement of people and goods introduces new pathogens to areas, damaging crops and animals
  • increased waste is produced, causing more pollution
• What affects food security?

  • war
  • increase in cost of fuel, fertilisers, feed and seeds etc
  • changing diets in developed countries
  • environmental changes, like reduced rainfall causing drought
