• What is deforestation?

  Permanent destruction of forests to make land available for other uses
• Reasons for deforestation:

  • more land to grow crops
  • more grassland for feeding cattle
  • timber
  • grow crops to make biofuels for cars
• Problems with deforestation:

  • less carbon dioxide removed from the air
  • burning of trees releases more carbon dioxide
• What is Peat?

  Partly decomposed plant material, found in peat bogs and peatland
• Why is peat useful?

  • used as a fuel
  • used to make garden compost
• Peat releases carbon dioxide when decayed further or burned as a fuel, contributing to global warming
