Anaerobic respiration

Cards (3)

  • What happens after exercise?
Heart rate remains high to pump oxygenated blood to replenish oxygen debt
Lactate is converted to pyruvate or stored in the liver cells
  • What occurs in lactate fermentation (humans)?
    • Pyruvate is reduced (accepts hydrogen from NADH) and converted to 2 lactates.
    • NADH is oxidised, allowing glycolysis to continue as they will be able to accept hydrogen from oxidation of triose phosphates
  • What occurs in ethanol fermentation?
    • 2 pyruvate are decarboxylated to become ethanal.
    • Ethanal is reduced to form ethanol by accepting hydrogen from oxidation of NADH, so that glycolysis can continue
