  • It normally delivers the right result that reflects the popular vote -e.g. 2012 and 2020
  • it was drawn up by the Founding Fathers in a very different era politically and when the USA was smaller and less diverse
  • a nationwide vote would lead candidates to focus on large urban areas
  • reflects the federal nature of the USA, ensuring that candidates have to campaign in a range of states and not just the most populous ones
  • faithless electors rarely affect the outcome of the election so are not a huge threat to representation
  • it gives a clear winner
