Sequencing the genome of corals from different regions to determine their responses to stress (changing conditions) e.g temperature fluctuations which lead to coral bleaching
E.g studying the genomes of coral species on the great barrier reef and then studying the same species of coral in the Red Sea where they naturally survive at higher temperatures
This could be crucial for the improved management of coral reefs and open possibilities of cross-breeding corals to reduce the bleaching events in the great barrier reef
This research could help scientists understand which parts of the coral organism play a significant role in moderating the way corals respond to stress
