  • "Chartered" - repeated throughout the first two lines of the poem to show that the Thames and the streets are owned by the rich
  • "Marks of weakness, marks of woe." - shows how there is no hope only desperation
  • "In every cry of every man ... every ban," - This is used to highlight how poverty effects all ages and "every" emphasises a community, or a society.
  • "The mind-forged manacles I hear." - metaphorical language this is used to highlight how the poor have no escape out of poverty,as they are stuck/trapped in this way of life.
  • "Every black'ning church appalls," - shows that the church is not using it's power to help the poor, even though it should.
  • "And blights with plagues the marriage hearse." - shows that the future (marriage) is in danger of death (hearse)
  • Regular rhyme and metre mirrors the restrain of the system, suffocating and oppressive
    • anti-establishment
    • Corrupt power and exploitation - ozymandias
  • Structure:
