  • During 1937, the Republican government slowly regained control of Catalonia. The anarchist militia had been replaced by the Popular Army, which had a traditional hierarchy. Traditional divisions between the rich and poor also re-emerged as money had been reintroduced and the black market flourished.  
  • Due to the growing influence of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE), worker’s control finally came to an end in Barcelona in May 1937. Fraction fighting between the PCE and the POUM and CNT. It resulted in the victory of the PCE and the destruction of the anarchist society in Catalonia. 
  • Troops returned to Barcelona to arrest members of the CNT and POUM. On 16th June, POUM was officially banned and in late June, much of the POUM leadership were executed by Spanish communists.  
  • Anarchy lasted longer in Aragon. However, on the 4th August, 11000 Popular Army troops were sent to crush the peasants’ council. The council was officially dissolved on 11th August 1937.
