Cards (15)

  • What is a closed system
    • a system where this no net change to the total energy to that system
    • the amount of energy must remain constant due to the law of conservation of energy
  • give an example of a system where energy stores changes
    • an apple on a table is seen as a system - because there no forces acting on the table of the apple the apple just sits there
    • if the table is removed the apple is dropped and energy is transferred to it's gravitional store
  • what is the law of conservation of energy
    • energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transferred from one system to another
    • total energy in a closed system remains constant and total energy transferred in = total transferred out
  • what is dissapted energy
    • energy that is not used for it's desired purpose
    • energy is disappeared to it's surrondings
  • what are the 8 types of energy stores
    kinetic
    gravitional
    elastic
    thermal
    chemical
    nuclear
    magnetic
    electrostatic
  • what is kinetic energy store
    • any object that moves have energy
  • what is thermal and chemical energy store
thermal - any object that has heat in it's energy stire
chemical energy store - any object that releases energy via a chemical reaction
  • what is nuclear energy store
    • atomic nuclei releasing their energy store during nuclear reactions
  • what is electrostatic and magnetic energy stores
    • electrostatic - objects with charge ( like protons and neutrons) reacting with each other to have energy in their store
    • magentic - magenta interacting with themselves in their energy stores
  • what is elastic and gravitional stores
    • gravitional stores - any object that falls/is lifted above the ground
    • elastic - any energy store that can be stretched
  • what are the 4 ways energy can be transferred
    • mechnically
    • by electricty
    • by radiation
    • by heating
  • what is mechincal transfer
    • when a force acts on an object (pulling stretching etc)
  • what is electrical transfer
    • a charge moving through a potential difference
  • what is energy transferred from heating
    • energy transferred from a hotter object to a warmer one
  • what is energy transferred by radiation
    • energy transferred via radiation such as electromagnetic waves
