The sign test

Cards (3)

  • When would you use a SIGN TEST?
When looking at paired/ related data.
    Repeated measures or matched pairs.
  • How to do a SIGN TEST
    1. Work out if hypothesis is one-tailed or two-tailed.
    2. Put the participants score for each variable into a table and work out the difference and then put the sign '-' or '+'.
    3. To find the calculated value of S, add up all the +'s and all the -'s taking the smallest number (ignore the 0s).
    4. Find N (number of participants).
    5. Find the critical value on the table.
    6. Compare the calculated value to the critical value (if it is smaller or it is equal then it is significant, if it isn't smaller or isn't equal it is not significant).
  • How to report the conclusion
The calculated value of S is __. This was/was not lower than the critical value of __ when N is __. Therefore, the findings are/aren't significant to __.
