Categorical Data

• Levels of Quantitative Data/Measurement:

  • categorical data
  • nominal
  • ordinal
• Nominal Level:

  • Named groups
  • The categories are mutually exclusive
  • Does not imply order, quality or dimension
• Ordinal Level:

  • Data that are ranked in order
  • The order carries value but the differences between each unit is not the same
  • Data can be grouped but, unlike nominal data, the groups have a rank order
