blood glucose concentration

Cards (8)

  • Blood glucose concentration just means how much sugar we have in our bloodstream. And it needs to be kept in a certain limit so that repsiration can take place
  • Blood glucose concentration is monitored and controlled by the pancreas.
  • when glucose levels are high to bring this down the pancreas release insulin which bind to certain receptors in muscle and liver cells and tell them to take in the glucose, the glucose is then converted to form glycogen, a long term storage of glucose this would make the blood glucose concentration to decrease to a normal level.
  • To fix low levels of glucose, the pancreas release a hormone called glucagon, which is released into the blood stream, it will then bind to cells mainly liver cells which would break its storage of glycagon into glucose and release it into the blood stream, bringing the concentration to a normal level.
  • Glucagon and insulin together create a negative feedback loop which means if glucose levels are too high in the bloodstream insulin is released to lower it, whereas if it's too low glucagon is released to increase it
  • type 1 diabetes (which is lifelong), the person pancreas cannot produce insulin which makes their glucose levels really high which might make them feel ill, to treat this insulin can be injected into their thing or abdomen it is best to do this after a meal as it will have the same effect as pancreas releasing insulin so it brings down the glucose levels.
  • How much a type 1 diabetic person is injected depends on the type of food, if they had a meal which is sugary then more will need to be injected so thats why a diabetic person is encourged too eat less sugary food and to exercise regularly which would absorb more glucose from our blood
  • type 2 diabetes happens to an older person due to their diet, the cells become resistant to insulin and cells won't take glucose from bloodstream even though it is being produced, to treat this the person should exercise regulary and have a low sugary, healthy diet.
