Mutations

Cards (10)

  • What is a mutation?
A change in the base sequence of DNA that occurs spontaneously
  • What is substitution?
One base is swapped with another
  • What is addition?
A base is added in somewhere
  • What is deletion?
A base is removed from somewhere
  • What is the result of substitution, deletion and addition?
May cause a different amino acid to be coded for which changes the primary sequence of the protein and its tertiary structure
  • What increase the chance of mutations?
    Carcinogens and radiation
  • Where do most mutations occur?
    In non-coding DNA
  • What is a mutagenic agent?
Something that speeds up the rate of mutations occuring. Such as UV light and radiation
  • What is frame shift?
During deletion or addition, bases are shifted which changes the entire sequence after.
  • What is non-disjunction?
A type of chromosome mutation that occurs in meiosis 1 or 2 that makes the chromosomes not split equally so they can end up in the wrong cells.
