Cards (10)
What is a mutation?
A change in the
base
sequence of DNA that occurs
spontaneously
What is substitution?
One base is
swapped
with another
What is addition?
A base is
added
in somewhere
What is deletion?
A base is
removed
from somewhere
What is the result of substitution, deletion and addition?
May cause a different
amino
acid to be coded for which changes the
primary
sequence of the protein and its
tertiary
structure
What increase the chance of mutations?
Carcinogens
and
radiation
Where do most mutations occur?
In non-coding DNA
What is a mutagenic agent?
Something that speeds up the
rate
of mutations occuring. Such as
UV
light and radiation
What is frame shift?
During
deletion
or
addition,
bases are
shifted
which changes the entire sequence after.
What is non-disjunction?
A type of chromosome
mutation
that occurs in
meiosis
1 or 2 that makes the chromosomes not
split
equally so they can end up in the wrong cells.
