Circulatory System - Blood

    Cards (13)

    • What 4 things does the blood consist of?
      • Red blood cells
      • White blood cells
      • Plasma
      • Platelets
    • What is the role of the red blood cells?
Carry Oxygen from the lungs to the cells in the body
    • What pigment is found in the red blood cells and responsible for transporting oxygen?
      Haemoglobin
    • What shape do red blood cells have and why?
They are shaped as biconcave disks to increase their surface area for oxygen
    • Where does haemoglobin combine with oxygen to make oxyhaemoglobin?
      In the Lungs
    • Where does oxyhaemoglobin split up back into haemoglobin and oxygen?
      In body tissues
    • What is the role of plasma?
Carries nutrients, hormones, proteins, waste products and all the other types of blood cells
    • What waste product does plasma carry?
      Carbon dioxide and Urea
    • What is the role of white blood cells?
Responsible for fighting infections and protecting the body from pathogens
    • What are the 2 different types of white blood cells?
      Phagocytosis and lymphocytes
    • How does phagocytosis help protect the body?
      They engulf pathogens
    • How do lymphocytes help protect the body?
They produce antibodies which bind to pathogens and also produce antitoxins to neutralise toxins produced by the pathogens
    • What are platelets and what is their role in the blood?
They are fragments of cells that help clot blood to stop bleeding and prevent pathogens from entering wounds
