  • The speaker is angry with his friend, and with his foe. He tells his friend about his anger, and everything is fine. He keeps his anger from his foe, and the anger grows, eventually killing his foe.
  • Conflict is obviously between the speaker and his enemy (“foe”). However there are other conflicts here too:
    · speaker’s division of people into friends and does (how does he determine this?)
    · Conflict within the speaker- due to his lack of honesty and superficial friendliness, being nice to someone he loathes makes the tree (his resentment) grow.
    · Loss of human empathy in the speaker- he is glad to see his friend dead
