Hypothesis

• Directional hypothesis (one tailed)

  A hypothesis that makes a specific prediction on the direction of the relationship between two variables

  eg coffee WILL have a POSITIVE EFFECT on participants
• Non directional hypothesis (two tailed)

  States there is a difference but not what the difference will be
• Null hypothesis

  States results were due to chance and not the IV that the researcher changed the statement predicts there will be no effect of the IV on the DV
• Alternate hypothesis

  Statement that is accepted if the sample provides sufficient evidence that the null hypothesis is false
