genetic engineering

Cards (5)

  • The patenting of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) raises ethical questions about ownership and control of living organisms.
  • changes the DNA of one organism
  • use a restriction enzyme to isolate the desirable gene leaving overhang of DNA. extract the plasmid from the vector and use the same restriction enzyme to cut the plasmid where the desirable gene will go. stick them together using ligase forming a recombinant DNA which is inserted back into the vector and it reproduce - multiplies rapidly also producing the desirable gene
  • ADVANTAGES: - its faster - increases crop yield - less use of pesticide-production is cheaper- food with more desirable traits
  • DISADVANTAGES: - allergic reactions - health risks - not ethical- what benefits one plant harms another as it creates plants that are resistant to pesticides
