Meiosis

• Cell division that occurs in gamete formation
• cell divides twice so that total amount of genetic material is halved in each gamete
• Maintains the chromosome number from one generation to the next by halving it in the gametes
• Two haploid gametes fuse to form a zygote
• If didn’t produce gametes with half the genetic material then chromosomes number would double at every generation
